Play Parklet

The attraction of all that Georgetown, D.C. has to offer including retail, food, history, etc. has all contributed to urban congestion at times. There is no more apparent example of this than the M street and Wisconsin Ave streetscapes. On any given day, there are pedestrians, bicyclists, scooterists, strollers, and large family and friend groups that are in constant battle to keep their space on the sidewalk.

While at HOK, our team worked with the Georgetown B.I.D to design and build a modular installation as part of Parking Day 2018 to garner some excitement from the community about moving towards a pedestrian-first Georgetown.

This specific installation put the idea of “play” at the center of the concept featuring an adult-sized see-saw and a floating bench. The bench integrated swivel brackets to allow users to freely rotate and arrange the seats as needed.
